Elections to Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala and Lok Sabha headquarters in Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh, will be held on May 19. The Chief Electoral Commissioner announced that the election program said it would be possible to convene an assembly by May 24. The election could also be held in the Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka rallies if dissolved by April 15, he said. The EC said the commission was not holding elections in Assam. As for Garhwal’s repoll, the EC said it had no doubt that the state government would cooperate.
Antulay warned
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has called on former Maharashtra Prime Minister AR Antulay to halt his campaigns against his successor, Babasaheb Bhosle. She made her position clear at a 15-minute meeting with Antulay in Delhi. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee handed over a similar report to Antulay.
Disaster in Mexico
All 10,000 residents of Francisco Leon, a city in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, fear the dead during the recent eruption of Chichonal Volcano. The city, barely 5 km from the crater of the volcano, was shrouded in a cloud of poisonous gases. The Mexican military is trying to save more than 1,50,000 people at risk of eruptions.
Permission to the cinema
The Delhi Police Licensing Wing has suspended licenses for six major cinemas in the capital: Regal, Plaza, Alankar, Chand, Sapna and Delite. The event was accepted on charges that the number of seats in the lower sections had been reduced, depriving the public of cheap entertainment.
