Film Academy banned on Friday Will Smith from attending an Oscars or any other academic event for 10 years after his slap Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.
The move comes after a meeting of the academy’s board of directors to discuss the response to Smith’s actions.
„94. The Oscars were to be a celebration of many individuals in our community who did an incredible job last year. However, these moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw exposing Mr. Smith to the podium, “the academy said in a statement.
Will Smith resigned from the academy last week in preparation for the meeting and said he would accept any punishment the academy would inflict.
“I accept and respect the academy’s decisions,” Smith said in a statement.
The academy also apologized for managing the situation and allowing Smith to stay and receive the Best Actor award for King Richard.
“We did not adequately address the situation in the room during our television broadcast. We apologize for that, “said the academy. “It was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, spectators and our academies around the world, and we have lagged behind – unprecedented.”
In a statement in the days after the Oscars, the academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony but refused.
However, it is not clear how the report was delivered to Smith or in what form, and several media outlets said he was never formally told to leave the Dolby Theater. The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that Oscar-winning producer Will Packer told Smith, “Officially, we don’t want you to leave. We want you to stay. “
The ban means that Will Smith will not present one of the top prizes at the next Oscars, as is the winner for best actor tradition.
In a statement Friday, the academy also expressed “deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for keeping calm in extraordinary circumstances.”
The academy’s statement did not address whether Smith could be nominated for an Oscar during his ten-year ban. She also took no steps to cancel the Academy’s Smith Award.
The Academy did not withdraw the Oscars from expelled members Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polansky.
