Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu once again made history by winning the first gold for India at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The athlete won the gold medal in the women’s 49 kg category when she lifted a combined weight of 201 kg (88 kg jerk, 113 kg throw). In the process, Chanu also created a new Commonwealth Games record and also broke a national record.
Marie Ranaivosoa of Mauritius, meanwhile, won the silver medal when she lifted a total of 172kg. Canadian Hannah Kaminski won the bronze medal thanks to a combined performance of 171 kg. Fans as well as B-town celebs are pouring in wishes for India’s historic win in weightlifting.
Actress Tamannaah Bhatia took to her official Twitter handle and uploaded a picture of Mirabai Chan, who was seen lifting weights. She shared the picture and wrote, “Congratulations to champion @mirabai_chan for winning India’s first gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022”.
Singer Palak Muchhal also tweeted, “First gold for India at #CWG2022 Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold in women’s 49kg weightlifting Proud of you @mirabai_chanu .. thank you for bringing us gold! #CommonwealthGames | #MirabaiIndiam4eChdia #India #MirabaiIndiam4 | #CWG2022India”.
