Birmingham: Led by Manpreet Singh, India managed to win a silver medal in hockey at the Commonwealth Games, making the nation proud once again. The team faced Australia on Monday and was defeated 0-7.
The Indian side couldn’t get through Australia’s midfield at all to score. After some heartbreaking moments with goalkeeper PR Sreejesh conceding two goals in the first quarter, India came back and struggled to get past the Australian defence.
In the second quarter, Australia built on defense and kept India from scoring. Jacob Anderson managed to get past Sreejesh to score the third goal for the Aussies. India’s Akashdeep Singh came close to scoring in the second quarter but a slight lapse in timing cost his side.
The Indian squad had to face injury concerns in the second quarter as well after captain Manpreet Singh collided with Aran Zalewski and had to leave the field. Since then, the opponents have continued to thrash the Indian side. Tom Wickham scored Australia’s fourth goal. Jacob Anderson edged Sreejesh to make it 5-0 for the Aussies.
The merciless team led by Aran Zalewski led 5-0 at halftime. Even Harmanpreet Singh, who scored 9 goals in CWG 2022, the most by any Indian in a single edition of the tournament, could not break through the opposition defence. However, Australia managed to maintain their dominance in the third quarter, scoring two more goals to take a 7-0 lead.
In the last quarter, the Indian side failed to defend and failed to score a single goal, similar to their last two CWG finals against Australia.
As the Indian side settled for the silver medal, Twitter reacted as follows:
Australia did not concede a single penalty corner goal during CWG 2022. They are now 7-time CWG champions and have not lost a CWG match since September 14, 1998. What else is dominance!#Hockey #INDvAUS #CWG2022

Australia @Kookaburras they just beat the world’s fifth ranked team, India, to win gold in men’s hockey. World class performance all over the pitch. A great way for Australia to cap off another Commonwealth Games win on the medal table. https://t.co/ktDynRAxO5

7th gold medal in men’s hockey in a row for Australia, who have now conceded only 2 goals in 7 finals! It was a masterclass straight out of the books of Delhi 2010 and Tokyo 2020 (21). It’s silverware to be proud of, but India still needs to close the gap

At the Commonwealth Games, the Indian men’s hockey team previously won the silver medal in 2010 and 2014. Both times, the side was defeated by Australia in the final. The Aussies have won hockey gold at the Commonwealth Games every time since the sport was first included in 1998.
