Aamir Khan Latest Movie Laal Singh Chadha, which was released on Thursday, faced protests in Punjab’s Jalandhar during its screening at PVR cineplex in the city yesterday.
One group led by Shiv Sena gathered outside the cinema hall and protested against it. Subsequently, the police arrived at the scene and after negotiations with the theater management, the screening was stopped.
On learning about it, Sikh organizations also reached the venue and raised slogans in favor of the film. They said the film is based on the character of a Sikh man and Hindu organizations have no right to stop its screening. However, Hindu organizations claimed that Aamir Khan’s PK had insulted Hindu gods and goddesses, due to which they protested against the release of his next film.
There were reports that protests against the film had broken out in Gorakhpur and Varanasi also. State president of Sanatan Rakshak Sena youth wing Chandra Prakash Singh and its vice president Arun Pandey claimed that Aamir Khan makes fun of Hindu deities in his films, according to PTI. “We will go door to door and ask people to boycott Aamir Khan’s films. At the same time, we also request Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ban the film,” they said.
Earlier, Aamir Khan had responded to the ‘boycott’ trend against his film. “Bollywood boycott, Aamir Khan boycott, Laal Singh Chaddha boycott. I feel sad. I am sad because many people who say this in their hearts believe that I am someone who does not like India. They believe it in their hearts, but it is not true,” he said. The Thugs of Hindostan star added, “I really love this country. So I have it. It is rather unfortunate if some people feel that way. I want to assure everyone that this is not the case, so please don’t boycott my movies. Please watch my movies.”
Laal Singh Chaddha did not receive many positive reviews. The film didn’t create much buzz at the box office either. According to Box Office India, the film grossed only Rs 10.75 crore, a shocking low, the least for Aamir in 13 years.
