Thank God controversy: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (October 19) refused to grant an urgent hearing to a stay plea on the October 25 release of Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra’s film ‘Thank God’ over alleged derogatory references to Lord Chitragupta. A bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi listed the plea of Shri Chitragupta Welfare Trust for hearing on November 1.
Apart from seeking a stay on the film’s release, the suit also sought to have its trailers and posters removed from electronic and social media platforms such as “Youtube” as they allegedly contained “defamatory expressions, acts, statements, dialogues and insults”. images, videos in and around the figure of God Chitragupta”.

Devgn plays the ‘god Chitragupta’, who is worshiped by Hindus and highly respected by people belonging to the ‘Kayastha’ caste. “The religious sentiments of the petitioner including other Kayastha people of the country are being damaged/hurt and the respondents are infringing and trespassing by making and releasing the said film,” the plaint said.
The petitioner’s trust made the Central Board of Film Certification, Indra Kumar, the film’s director, producer Bhushan Kumar and Devgn, participants.
The film stars Sidharth Malhotra, Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh in lead roles. Sidharth and Rakul Preet will be sharing screen space for the third time and have previously worked together in Marjaavaan and Aiyaary. The comedy film is directed by Indra Kumar. As the film nears its release date, the makers have dropped the first song from the film titled Manike. The song is the official Hindi remake of Sri Lankan singer Yohani’s popular song Manike Mage Hithe. Features the voices of Jubin Nautiyal and Surya Ragunathan. The rap verse was composed by Mellow D. Manike. Manike has Nora opposite Sidharth Malhotra in a special appearance.
