Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas released the trailer of his upcoming film Vazhakkak, which is Malayalam for argument, on Tuesday. Over two minutes long, the promo introduces us to the ominous mood of the film, which seemingly follows a man’s mind-bending journey to an unknown land.
Tovino plays Siddharth, who visits an unknown place despite not being advised to do so. “It’s a notorious place,” a female friend probably told Siddharth. What the place is infamous for, the trailer didn’t reveal. But we have a strong feeling that something sinister is going on in that place.
Siddharth seems to get involved in the life of a warrior woman played by Kani Kusruti and her frightened daughter. Things soon get stressful and pretty violent. The film also stars Sudev Nair, Devaki Rajendran, Azeez Nedumangad, Byju Netto, Bhrugu and Vishnujith S V.
Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan wrote and directed Vazhakkak. In addition to playing the lead role, Tovino also co-produced the film.
Vazhakkak seems to have all the typical narrative elements of Sanal’s previous films. The film takes place in a lonely place full of characters who carry a huge emotional burden, and the overall dark and ominous mood is unmistakable.
Sanal Kumar Sasidharan first came to national attention after winning the prestigious Hivos Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2017 for his film S Durga. The thriller follows a couple who elope in the middle of the night. Their real suffering begins when they hitchhike for lack of safer transportation. Although the film received international acclaim, it faced a lot of backlash in India.
Recently, Sanal made headlines for the wrong reasons when he was arrested for allegedly spreading false information about actor Manju Warrier.
