Rekindle your sense of wonder this Christmas with Zee Theater bringing two internationally acclaimed musicals to the small screen. This season of joy, enjoy family time with hot chocolate and luxury treats like ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Peter Pan Live!’
The original Broadway production based on Maria von Trapp, “The Tale of the Trapp Singers” opened in 1959 and was followed by an iconic film in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film won five Academy Awards, and what survives to this day is the musical score by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It continues to play in various formats in multiple productions, with this version directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford.
It stars Grammy winner Carrie Underwood as Maria alongside Stephen Moyer, Audra McDonald, Christian Borle and Laura Benanti. The narrative takes us down memory lane again with the wild Maria, who falls in love with a naval hero just as the Nazis begin to tighten their grip on Austria.
Scottish novelist and playwright JM Barrie’s story of eternal childhood on a mythical island called Neverland has inspired animated films, live action, West End and Broadway adaptations. And now Zee Theater brings ”Peter Pan Live!”, a production inspired by the original 1954 Broadway musical on Indian television. Its televised version in 1955 attracted an audience of 65 million viewers and was then the highest-rated stand-alone program in television history. This version features Oscar-winning legend Christopher Walken as Captain Hook, Allison Williams plays Peter Pan in this Rob Ashford and Glenn Weiss direction.
The story of Peter’s search for joy and wonder, innocence and magic on an island retreat, his struggle against many obstacles, and his courage and self-confidence are as inspiring today as they were when the musical was first performed. Much-loved songs such as ‘Tender Shepherd’, ‘Never Never Land’ and ‘Distant Melody’, ‘spectacular swordplay and uplifting choreography make this musical an experience not to be missed. The musical also stars Christian Borle, Kelli O’Hara, Alanna Saunders, Taylor Louderman and Jake Lucas.
